CDBU is a non-profit organization funded by its members and supporters. To achieve our objectives, we need your financial support. Join the CDBU and support us in our work to advocate for an alternative to the marketized system of higher education in the UK.

 

As a member you will have the opportunity to: 

• Help to shape the future of British universities, ensuring that academic values are upheld and the academic voice listened to 
• Influence CDBU policy making and campaigns 
• Participate in symposia and meetings with leading figures from the sector and politics  
• Vote at the AGM and stand for the Executive Committee or become an officer of the CDBU 
• Write op-ed pieces and book reviews for the blog

All members receive our monthly newsletter and become subscribers to the CDBU blog. 

 

What we do with membership fees and donations

We use resources from members to fund research projects. We have recently supported the following projects: 

• When and Why Do We Read? The Time and Value of Reading in the Twenty-First-Century University  
• Satisfied customers? Interrogating ‘the student experience’ in the neoliberal university  
• University Governance: Views from the Inside 

 

Membership rates 

Students, the unwaged and independent scholars: FREE

Salaried/pensioned colleagues:

If you earn up to £40,000: £20 per annum or £2 per month

If you earn up to £40,000 to £60,000: £30 per annum or £3 per month

If you earn above £60,000: £40 per annum or £4 per month

 

Our Aims

“The aim of the CDBU is to promote and sustain British universities as places where students can develop their capabilities to the full and where scholarship, research and teaching can be freely pursued at the highest level.” 

 

We will

• Defend the autonomy of institutions of higher education against interference by government or other external bodies
• Support academic freedom in research and teaching and encourage understanding of the rights and responsibilities associated with it
• Advocate for a university education accessible to all those able to benefit from it and explore models of financing which acknowledge it as a public good as well as a private good
• Promote inclusive teaching and research as interdependent and the corresponding principles of diversity and equality
• Champion educational values which empower students through teaching and research which gives a priority to intellectual and personal development, civic engagement and transferable skills
• Resist the rising tide of managerialism in universities and restore the role of academic values in university governance
